‘Your Natural Rhythm Is the Earth’s Rhythm’
“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” (Nikola Tesla)
Last week we talked about how nature is one of the deepest ways we truly rest. This week, let us take that a level deeper, down to the rhythm humming quietly underneath it all, the rhythm of the Earth itself.
Have you ever noticed how calm you feel standing by the ocean, walking through a forest, sitting by a fire, or in those slow drifting moments just before sleep? That deep settling is not random. In those moments you are slipping back into your natural rhythm, the one you were born with.
In my book I talk about what that rhythm is, and where it comes from. It turns out it may be tuned to something far bigger than us.
The Speed Your Mind Is Running At
Nikola Tesla once said that if we want to understand the secrets of the universe, we should think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration. You and I are no exception to that. We are energy, humming along at a frequency every moment of the day. Our brains hum at different speeds, measured as brainwaves. When we are stressed, rushed and busy, we are up in the fast, buzzing beta state. When we truly relax, we drop down into the slower, calmer waves called alpha and theta. This is where we feel peaceful, open, creative and clear. That alpha and theta range is our natural resting rhythm; the gear we are meant to spend far more time in than we do.
The Earth Has a Pulse Too
Here is the part that gives me goosebumps. The Earth itself has a natural pulse, a frequency of around eight cycles every second, which scientists call the Schumann resonance, and it sits right inside that same alpha and theta range. Our calmest, most natural rhythm is tuned to the quiet heartbeat of the planet beneath our feet. When nature settles you, your body may literally be syncing back to the rhythm of the Earth.
Modern Life Pulls Us Out of Tune
The trouble is that the modern world keeps us revved up in that fast beta state almost all the time. Notifications, deadlines, traffic, noise and endless screens keep the engine screaming. We end up wired and tired all at once, lying awake wondering why we cannot switch off. We have quietly drifted out of our natural rhythm, out of tune with ourselves and with the Earth.
Coming Back Into Rhythm
The great news is that we can tune back into it any time we choose. Time in nature, slow and gentle breathing, stillness, meditation or prayer, hypnosis, music that gives you goosebumps (think around sixty beats a minute, nothing heavy), or losing yourself completely in something creative, all these gently guide the mind back down into alpha and theta. As a hypnotherapist, this calm alpha and theta state is exactly where I guide people, because it is where deep, lasting change tends to happen. This is what I call coming home to ‘The Garden,’ the calm, clear place within where your truest self can finally breathe. It was never far away. It is simply your natural rhythm, waiting for you to slow down enough to feel it again.
A Question to Sit With
This week, carry one gentle question with you.
‘What helps me drop out of the rush and back into my natural rhythm, and how can I do more of it?’
Your natural rhythm is the Earth’s rhythm. Slow down, breathe, step outside, and let yourself tune back in. It is the most natural thing in the world.
Have a great week,
Michael
