‘Sometimes a Miracle Moves Through Us’

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” (Albert Einstein)

Have you ever witnessed something in your life that you could only describe as a miracle? A moment so far beyond what you could plan or explain that all you could do afterward was sit quietly and wonder at it. I have, and one of them has never left me.

I want to share it gently, and with great care, because it involves someone I will never identify. Her story is hers, and her privacy matters deeply to me. What I can share is what moved through the therapy room that day.

The Day Something Moved Through Me

I took over a client from a fellow therapist who left the clinic because she was due to have a baby soon. This client came into my care and in our first session she began to talk about what was happening in her life. As she spoke, something came over me. I found myself saying things, answering things, that poured through me from somewhere internally. It amazed her, and it stunned me just as much.

What I Did Not Know

Near the end of the session, she told me something that stopped me in my tracks. The night before our session, she had quietly decided that if she did not find the answers she was searching for, she was going to end her life.

Somehow, without ever knowing what her questions were the night before, I had answered all of them and more. She was wondering where I came from and looked at me with hope. Then I asked her a single question, asking her how she could turn her life around from that moment on.

The Miracle

The next session I witnessed a miracle. She had taken her power back. In the space of one week, doing the things she was too scared to do prior that needed to be done to turn her whole life around. Her trnasformation was extraordinary.

The answers were already within her, waiting for a safe place to be heard, and the courage, the work that week were hers alone. I simply got out of my own way long enough for something greater to move through, and she did the rest.

It Had Happened Before

That day in the therapy room was not the first time something like this had moved through me. In my book, Where the F*ck Do Our Minds Go? I share a moment with a good mate of mine Frank who worked with me on a Building site in 1988. One early morning he was wrestling with something heavy and reached out for advice. Without planning a single word, I found myself saying exactly what he needed to hear. It surprised him, and it surprised me just as much. Those words came from the same quiet place.

When we truly listen, and get our own thinking out of the way, it seems something deeper has a way of speaking through us.

Trying to Understand It

I drove home that night after the session with the client, thinking about it over and over, trying to understand what had actually happened. I have come to believe these moments happen to many of us, in all sorts of ways, when we quieten our own noise and let something larger move through us. Call it intuition, grace, the deeper knowing we all carry, our guides, angels and our higher self. That day was truly a miracle.

If You Are in That Dark Place

And if you are sitting where she was sitting that night, convinced the answers will never come, please hear this gently. You matter, the darkness is not the whole story, and the help and the answers are often far closer than they feel in that moment. Please reach out to someone you trust, or to a professional. You do not have to carry it alone.

A Question to Sit With

This week ask yourself:

‘Where in my life might a miracle already be quietly waiting. When I become still enough to let it in?’

Sometimes we are not the source of the miracle. We are simply the channel for it. Stay open, stay present, and never underestimate what can move through a single honest moment.

Have a great week,

Michael
