Is Our Soul Tired Or Something Else?
Who is Really Tired: Your Soul or Your Ego?
Do you ever feel so exhausted that every day feels like you’re trudging through knee-deep mud? That heavy, dragging sensation that makes waking up a struggle and facing the day a challenge. So who is really tired here? Is it your soul or your ego?
The Infinite Soul vs. The Burdened Mind
If your soul is infinite, timeless, and boundless, how can it truly be tired? The fatigue you feel is rarely your soul’s weariness. Instead, it’s often your thoughts, beliefs, habits, and lifestyle choices running the show that is telling you that your life is a grind with no relief in sight. You might find yourself dreaming of escape: a holiday, retirement, or numbing distractions like alcohol, smoking, or other substances just to get through the day.
This kind of tiredness is resistance. It’s a mental and emotional weight created by the stories you tell yourself, also stories of limitation, frustration, or hopelessness. Unless you recognize and understand this resistance, you’ll keep living day after day hoping for “someday” when life will suddenly feel better.
Retirement Isn’t always the Cure
Many people think retirement will solve their exhaustion, no more work stress, no more deadlines. Retirement can become just another routine that lacks meaning and connection. Without purpose or daily interaction, it’s easy to fall into a new kind of emptiness.
The key is waking up each day to do something you truly love. Whether it’s gardening, meeting friends for coffee, biking, golfing, or creating with your hands and finding joy in small daily activities that fills your heart and fuels your spirit. The rhythm of meaningful daily habits brings vitality and satisfaction.
As Mike Murdock wisely said: “The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.”
The Danger of Monotony: Lessons from “I Dream of Jeannie”
I remember an episode of “I Dream of Jeannie” called “Always on Sunday”. Jeannie uses her powers to make every day a Sunday so her master can relax endlessly. Imagine if every day really was Sunday, the same weather, same routine, week after week. At first, it might sound wonderful, sooner or later that sameness would drive anyone stir crazy.
This made me think about the seasons and the weather, a natural variety in life that keeps us balanced and thriving. Rainy days nurture the garden just as much as sunny ones warm us. Variety is essential for growth; monotony suffocates the soul.
Melbourne is famous for experiencing multiple seasons in one day, that unpredictability mirrors life’s natural ebb and flow. Embracing change keeps us alive and engaged.
When Rest Becomes Resistance
Wanting to rest or do nothing is perfectly normal sometimes, it allows our body and spirit to recharge. When inactivity becomes a habit driven by our ego saying “I can’t be bothered,” it can become a problem. Our spirit urges us to rise, create, and move forward without limits.
Poor nutrition compounds this issue. Feeding ourselves junk food weakens the body, causing aches, pains, and limitations that trap us in a cycle of excuses. We become prisoners of our own choices. Our social circle shapes our beliefs and habits profoundly. Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people fuels growth; toxic relationships drain energy and confidence.
As Jim Rohn said: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
My Personal Journey: Choosing Growth
At one point, someone told me I had worked on myself enough and should stop. Thankfully, I didn’t listen. Since then, I’ve grown into a spiritual healer, soul-based therapist, hypnotherapist, counsellor, and author where all these roles have given me meaning and purpose.
That person who doubted me is no longer part of my core circle. I left behind friendships where manipulation and gaslighting were common because I realised they didn’t serve my growth. Over time, my closest friends have become pillars of support, some friendships spanning over 40 - 50 years.
What Is Your Ego Telling You?
Every day, ask yourself: What thoughts are running through my mind? Are you stuck in the past? Holding onto anger or resentment? These emotional weights drain your energy and cloud your mind. Right now are you able to let go even, 1% of this burden today? And then a little more tomorrow? Holding on to old pain only makes you sick and tired, physically and emotionally, which traps you in a story you no longer need to believe.
Buddha reminds us: “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”
Your Soul as an Infinite Light
Have you ever used a dimmer switch to adjust a light? The electricity source stays constant; the switch only controls how much light shines into the room. Your soul is like that steady source of power, always there, infinite energy ready to shine. Habits like self-doubt, fear, neglect, or unhealthy routines act as dimmer switches on your inner light. They don’t destroy your true essence; they just limit how much of it shows.
Become ‘the observer’ this week, observe your thoughts, behaviours, what you eat, what drains you or what uplifts you. Go out into nature, take time away from people, journal or whatever works for you. What is your source of tiredness?
Have a great week!
Michael
